●Summary of Change:uEZ® GUI 7.0” Family migration to new LCD.Reason for Change:Seiko Instruments, Inc., the supplier of the 7.0 LCD used on the -70WVE versions of the uEZ GUI 7.0 Family, has withdrawn these products from the market effective March 31, 2012. Therefore, FDI will now offer new uEZ GUI 7.0 units with another compatible LCD to maintain and extend the Family long into the future.Detailed ●Description of Change:
■One of the advantages, of using a System on Module (SOM) subassembly like the uEZ GUI is that a change to any component like a memory chip, a capacitor or even the LCD is addressed directly by the SOM supplier, so that the impact to individual customers is minimal, if any at all. Obviously, even with that being said, we do realize that the change of something as critical as the LCD is very important to you and all of our other uEZ GUI customers, and we take this matter very seriously.
■FDI worked for several months with our LCD suppliers and major distribution partners to review all of the available replacement 7.0” LCD options and to help assure that we made the best possible decision on the LCD migration path for the uEZ GUI 7.0” unit. All of our existing customers will have approximately 30 days after our written PCN notice, to input any Last Time Buy (LTB) requirements for the existing Seiko version and FDI will have the new 7.0” uEZ GUI version in volume production before we stop shipping the old version. This will allow all of our customers to decide how to best manage the transition time frame and quantities for both the “old” and “new” version 7.0 uEZ GUI to help minimize the impact on your overall product development cycle.
■Obviously our goal is to assure that the new uEZ GUI 7.0 unit is 100% backward compatible, both mechanically and electrically, with the existing version and we believe that we have come very close to this objective. There are some very subtle differences in the LCD viewing angle, brightness and other factors that are beyond our control, but fortunately we do not believe these will impact most of our customers.
This situation with Seiko is unfortunate, but again we think it reinforces that the customer decision to use a SOM based product like the uEZ GUI isa very good one, since FDI is absorbing the significant hardware, software and systems redesign effort associated with this LCD transition. This keeps the customer engineering team from being burdened with this transition task and allows you to stay focused on optimizing your specific product.
■We assure you that our highest priority is maintaining product continuity for all of our uEZ GUI customers, and we are using every resource available to us to make sure this transition is as painless as possible for every customer involved. The existing uEZGUI-1788-70WVE-BA and uEZGUI-2478-70WVE-BA will continue to be available until distributor stock is depleted.
